Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's departure, the Ford family was taken care of by her mom, grandmother as well as godparents. Ford suffered from anxiety disorder based on words as a young teenager. Ford became fascinated by acting during her teens, she joined the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she wasn't a good fit. Ford reapplied for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, after the fourth time she applied she was eventually accepted. One of her classmates were Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut, appearing on Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1990. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate made appearances on television during the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate also regularly worked in the theatre, and later joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate received recognition for her stand-up comedy and was added to her portfolio in 1996.
